Advice from a lion tracker

Boyd Varty is a lion tracker. His job is to track lions in his family’s Game Reserve so their safari guests can photograph them.

Here is how he describes his task :

"I don’t know where we are going. But I know exactly how to get there."

This encapsulates the idea of both knowing and not knowing.

It represents the task of discovery as a key aspect of the journey.

It tells us that we can’t know the destination without discovery.

In memory reconsolidation work, we too place discovery at the very centre of what we do.

Our task is to rewrite the nervous system predictions born from trauma and other emotional learnings.

But first we need discovery to understand what to rewrite.

We can’t know what that is in advance.

We don’t know where we are going. But the roadmap of memory reconsolidation means we can know exactly how to get there.
