I like to use imagination to help trigger memory reconsolidation. It’s not the only way to generate mismatch experiences, but it’s readily available.
Another advantage is that it interacts directly with the nervous system.
We all know this. Who hasn’t woken from a nightmare with their heart pounding? A nervous system response to mere imagination.
We can use imagination positively to mismatch difficult feelings and schemas.
Clients sometimes think they are getting visualisation wrong.
They’ll report that they can’t see the details of the visualisation clearly. Or that they are in the third person in the imagined scene, like they are watching it on TV. Or they’ll report something else that leaves them concerned that they aren’t doing it “right.”
Here’s the thing. None of that matters. Imagination is just a device to provoke the nervous system into a mismatching set of feelings.
We don’t need to visualise “well”.
We just need to evoke the new feeling. In the reimagined scene, if our clients feel safe, loved, valued, or whatever it is that would generate mismatch, that’s what matters.
Not the clarity of the visualisation itself.
These are the kind of nuances that explain why I do coaching rather than courses. I can provide all kinds of information about how to trigger transformational change.
And I do. I even wrote an entire book about it.
But it’s always in the implementation that the nuances get ironed out and mastery is developed.
