Discovery is where we find out how the client’s problem makes perfect sense.
The disorder model stands counter to this of course. Yet I’ve never met a client whose problem doesn’t make perfect sense given what they’ve been through.
Typically, their problem is a solution to or a defence against an even worse problem.
There are many wonderful techniques for discovering this quickly, and I teach them inside my Coaching Academy.
Yet even though we have these great techniques, following the breadcrumbs is still needed.
To follow the breadcrumbs, notice what your client just said and be curious about it. Notice what isn’t clear to you and ask about it so it becomes clear. Build on what they’ve just told you. Ask about distinctions and exceptions.
They can lead you to the discovery all by themselves.
