The Invisible Twin is the part of your client that doesn’t want to lose the problem.
Its view is that, if your client gets the change they want, things would get even worse.
Part of our therapy work is to make the Invisible Twin visible, because it typically operates out of awareness.
But how do we defeat the Invisible Twin?
Simple answer – we don’t.
Memory reconsolidation is different. We don’t seek to defeat the Invisible Twin but for it to voluntarily stand down. It is change by consent.
If the Invisible Twin learning is outdated then we can update it using memory reconsolidation.
It is not a bad part. It is a protective part operating from an old prediction. Once that prediction is updated, the Invisible Twin steps down.
Not because it has been beaten or vanquished with hostility. But because it knows that its old role is no longer necessary.
