So do you like tennis or do you prefer sports?
It’s a confusing question only because tennis *is* a sport. It falls under the general umbrella of sport.
The same is true when we think of neuroplasticity and memory reconsolidation.
Just as tennis fits under the umbrella of sport, memory reconsolidation falls under the umbrella of neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity recognises that the brain is a changing and changeable organ.
So even those doing what I think of as old-style therapy are engaged in neuroplasticity. They seek to build new brain pathways to compete with the trauma response pathway.
The brain changes when it adds the new competitive pathway. This shows that it is neuroplastic rather than fixed. But it is a very limited form of neuroplasticity, because the trauma response itself remains, ready to be reactivated at any time.
Memory reconsolidation is a kind of neuroplasticity that goes way beyond this.
It removes trauma response from a brain pathway completely and forever. Moreover, it is the only known kind of neuroplasticity that does so.
As Bruce Ecker puts it, it is "the only type of neuroplasticity known to neuroscience that is capable of fully depotentiating and functionally eliminating a specific emotional learning."
Neuroplasticity is exciting of course. Yet memory reconsolidation is the most exciting aspect of neuroplasticity. It is the only known form of neuroplasticity that can remove an emotional learning entirely.
