The mental health v mental illness paradigm

Here’s a question. Are you a mental health professional?

If your answer is yes, does that mean your clients are mentally ill?

When I think of my clients, I’d say no. They have struggles, challenges and distress, as we all do. But never do I think of them as mentally ill.

Last year, I felt it would be useful to get some therapy myself. Did that mean I was mentally ill?

Again, no.

The most effective stance for transformation work is that the client’s problem makes sense.

But if it makes sense, how can it be an illness? When else do we see the body doing what it is meant to do and call it ill?

It begs the question: is the medical paradigm the best way to describe what we do? Is there another paradigm that honours the levels of challenge and distress people face without needing to view it medically?
