The sounds of silence

Chris McCausland is a well-known comedian from my home city of Liverpool. He is also blind.

In a recent interview, fellow funnyman Rob Brydon mentioned how, before a show, he will step into the empty performance space and get a sense of it. The size, the shape.

I do this as a musician too. Some spaces are set up for a great show. Others are an inherent struggle. Stepping out before the show lets you know what you are dealing with.

Rob wanted to know whether Chris checks out the room like that too given his blindness.

Turns out he does. He said, "you get a sense of a room simply by checking how the silence sounds."

I’d never thought of that before. But it’s true. Silence in a small room sounds different to the silence of a large hall.

This is the value of leaning on clients for information and insight rather than interpreting and taking an expert position.

People have so many insights we could never have due to the very uniqueness of their experience.

When we focus on our own expertise, we miss most of the expertise in the room – theirs.

It’s easy to forget that even memory reconsolidation is theirs. The client brings that brain mechanism with them. Our job is to help their innate healing mechanism to trigger.

The most effective ways to do that are all based on mining our client’s expertise.
