When clients describe something as surprising or weird, pay attention.
It’s a sign of a potential mismatch.
Mismatches are a key part of the trauma removal formula. Without relevant mismatches, memory reconsolidation cannot happen.
When we are surprised, it means we expected one thing and got another.
Or to put it another way, we *predicted* one thing and got another.
Where a prediction/belief keeps a client’s problem alive, a mismatch experience breaks that prediction.
The result? It feels surprising or weird.
