The Invisible Twin is my way of thinking of the part of us that doesn’t want change.
The client starts working with us saying "I do this, and I hate it, and I want it to stop".
The Invisible Twin is the part that makes change so difficult.
Its view is: "You might want it to stop, but if I let change happen, things would be far worse."
Sometimes, therapists and coaches think of it as the "evil twin". But it’s not. It is protective.
More importantly, it can sometimes be right.
Let’s take this example of someone who procrastinates with their studies.
Client: I keep procrastinating and I want to be able to study for my medical degree without getting in my own way!
Twin: No you don’t. You want to be a poet and study literature. It’s your father who wants you to be a doctor. You detest the idea.
The Invisible Twin usually intervenes based on an old outdated prediction. Yet sometimes, it is right and sharing something you desperately need to hear.
