When clients say words and phrases, we need to help them to get specific.
A phrase might seem self evident, but will mean different things to different people.
When someone says “I want to be happy”, their definition of happiness will differ from mine and yours. So we need to get specific and ask.
“Suppose you were happy, what would that look like? How would you know you were now happy?”
There is a lot of hidden learning beneath the words our clients use. By asking questions that help them get specific, both you and your client will learn a lot.
Perhaps they say: “But if I do such and such a thing, there’ll be a disaster!”
Everyone’s disaster is different. We can’t know what they mean until we ask them to get specific and unpack it.
